Instructions for using Scratch to learn simple code

Scratch is a block-based coding platform that allows users to create their own games, stories, and animations. 1. Start a new project

To code with Scratch, first open the Scratch site at MIT. Next, click the button Start Creating to create a new project.

2. Drag code blocks

Code blocks are located on the left side of the screen. To write code, click and drag the blocks into the large space in the middle.

Initially, characters and objects were called Sprites and as many Sprites could be added or removed as desired. Every time a Sprite is added, it will appear on the stage area.

3. Click on Sprites to write code for them

Click on each Sprite to code for that specific Sprite. There are hundreds of fun Sprites to choose from, a soccer player, a butterfly or a ballerina,…

To write code, people can drag code blocks from the left side and connect them together. Each Sprite as well as the background will have its own code.

These blocks can make the Sprites move, make sounds, and change colors. And when connected together, they form a series of actions to build games, animations, and other projects.

4. Run the code

Once you’ve finished coding your project, everyone can click on it Green flag icon to see your code run.

If you want to save or share your project, make sure it’s saved in your account. If you already have an account, click Log in. If you need to create an account, click Join Scratch to set up a new Scratch account.
